Best time to see Fall foliage

Fall foliage in the Charlottesville area

Fall is a great time to visit Charlottesville. The changing leaves offer an abundance of color and the weather is cooler but still nice. Based on past years, the best times to see the changing leaves in Charlottesville are the last week in October through the first week in November. But – and where have you heard this before – results based on previous years do not necessarily reflect the peak fall foliage periods of this year. To avoid disappointment , check out the weekly Fall Foliage Reports from the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF), starting the week of Sept. 30, 2013.

Tour tip

The VDOF just released the first ever VDOF-Recommended Fall Foliage Driving Tours. Each of these tours – designed by a local VDOF forester – is sure to exceed your expectations and fill your eyes with wide swatches of vibrant yellows, reds and oranges. And, because these recommended drives are “off the beaten path,” you’ll be able to enjoy a leisurely trip without the hassles of a lot of traffic on the road or large crowds at stops along  the way.
