Flying Fox Vineyard

by / Thursday, 19 September 2013 / Published in Charlottesville Wine Tours

“Where are the grapes?” we asked Alix Meardon who poured the first of 8 wines for our tasting. Pretty close by, she assured us. Flying Fox’s grapes are happily growing on the hill across Blue Mountain Brewery, a little bit further down route 151. The charming tasting room was filled with art, happy people and a good vibe. Flying Fox is a small winery, owned and run by Lynn Davis and Rich Evans. After many years of growing grapes they recently made the leap and started producing their own wines. We are happy they did.

The wines

The 2009 Trio, a harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot won several prizes. The production is limited and you can only take 2 bottles of the 2009 Trio home. The Fox Red, an off-dry blend of Cabernet and Merlot is popular amongst tasters, just like the 2012 White Table, a semi-sweet version of Vidal Blanc. We especially enjoyed the 2012 Viogner and the 2010 Merlot, a bold wine with robust tannins.

What sets this vineyard apart?

With 8 high-quality wines to taste from, it would be easy to forget this vineyard has only 6 and a half acres of planted varieties. Only the limited number of cases produced per wine reminds you of its size, making it even more special to take a few bottles home from this vineyard. The charming tasting room and the warm and welcome atmosphere completely make up for the fact that the tasting room isn’t surrounded by the vineyard.

Lunch options

Flying Fox offers a cheese plate ($10). You are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the picnic area with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Insider tip

Flying Fox Vineyard is located on Route 151, the highway to several award winning vineyards and breweries. If you want to spend more time in the area, Lynn and Rich highly recommend Le Bleu Ridge Bed & Breakfast, a 5 acres pre-civil war era landmark. The B&B is located on the same property as Flying Fox Vineyards, next to the tasting room.
